In this spread, this was the first drawing I did for the book. When I was intentionally thinking about the idea and brainstorming how to start it, I finally landed on Noah lying with his mother in the bed. This was a scene I carried with me as I thought back to the last time I saw my mother. I lay in my mother's arms in the hospital bed for the very last time, just as Noah did.
